Scaleway Buys Saagie to Build Sovereign Data and AI Stack

Scaleway has acquired Saagie, according to an announcement from Groupe Iliad. The move consolidates two French technology providers under one roof, with the stated goal of building a fully sovereign data and AI platform.

Sovereignty is the operative word here. European operators, particularly in regulated sectors, face pressure to keep data and AI workloads on infrastructure they can audit and control. Scaleway already provides cloud compute. Saagie adds the data orchestration and pipeline layer. Together they cover more of the stack a buyer needs to avoid sending sensitive workloads to US hyperscalers.

Watch whether this combination can sell to public sector and enterprise buyers who have budget but distrust fragmented vendor chains. The signal is not the acquisition itself. The signal is whether Scaleway can close deals that a standalone cloud provider could not. Iliad is reporting this directly, so deal terms are not yet public.
